Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey

The Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey, also called the MCBS, is a sociological survey of Medicare beneficiaries in the United States sponsored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

History

It has been conducted every year since 1991 and contains a comprehensive dataset on the Medicare population, including social and medical risk factors and the relationship between these factors. The study is longitudinal and follows cohorts of beneficiaries over the course of three years. As of 2019 the data have been collected by NORC at the University of Chicago. Prior to this the data were collected by Westat.

Among the major findings of the survey are that African-American Medicare beneficiaries are more likely than white beneficiaries to have cost-related problems with their health care.[1]
