History

Von Holzhausen was founded in Malibu in 2015 by former automotive designer Vicki von Holzhausen.[3]

The company started out by developing its materials for handbags and other accessories. Today, it supplies plant-based textiles to a variety of industries including fashion, furniture, aerospace, and automotive.[3]

The company has partnered with corporations such as Apple to create product ranges sold worldwide,[4] and Spanish automaker Cupra to create a custom interior for a show car, which debuted at the IAA Mobility show in 2023.[3]

In 2022, von Holzhausen announced a partnership with Nanollose, to develop a leather alternative made from microbial cellulose.[5]

Technology

The company's technologies range from plant-based leather alternatives to biodegradable topcoats.[6]

Notable developments include Liquidplant, a 100 percent plant-based performance topcoat that replaces petroleum versions.[3] And a biodegradation technology that allows materials to break down in a landfill condition.[4]

von Holzhausen has been recognized in the SEAL Business Sustainability Awards,[7] Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas[8] and Innovation by Design Awards,[9] INC's Female Founder Awards,[10] and Core77 Design Awards [11] for its innovative technologies.

Products

The company currently has five commercially available innovations including Technik, Banbū, Struktur, Liquidplant, and Replant.[3]

It also offers its own line of accessories at vonholzhausen.com.

Collaborations

In 2022 von Holzhausen worked with Unplugged Performance to create a custom car for The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.[12]

They have also partnered with French brand Lola James Harper to create a candle inspired by their material Banbū.[13]
