Digital Media Concepts/Latimer

Latimer is a large language model and artificial intelligence platform developed by Latimer.AI. The system is designed to improve cultural representation and reduce bias in AI responses, specifically focusing on Black and Brown communities and historically marginalized perspectives.[1] The platform uses licensed and curated sources to expand contextual knowledge while supplementing base models with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques.

Latimer is named after inventor and innovator Lewis Latimer, reflecting the company’s stated commitment to inclusivity in technological development.[2]

Background: Bias in artificial intelligence

Mainstream AI systems have faced criticism for perpetuating harmful stereotypes and under-representing cultures outside Western or majority-population narratives.[1] Research institutions, advocacy groups, and technology companies have collaborated to address these issues through data curation, fairness testing, and model evaluation. Tools like Latimer are positioned within this broader effort to mitigate systemic bias in machine learning.

History and mission

Latimer.AI was founded by technologist and entrepreneur John N. Pasmore. The project was publicly highlighted beginning in 2023–2024 with a stated mission to build a more inclusive alternative to major LLM systems.[2] The platform’s goals include increasing positive cultural representation, improving response accuracy around Black and Brown history, and giving users access to culturally relevant information.

Technology

Latimer incorporates retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which supplements a base LLM with a proprietary vector database of curated and licensed content.[1] This content is intended to provide grounded context for responses related to underrepresented groups.

The company also provides a browser-based Bias Analyzer tool that highlights potentially biased language in text inputs.[3]

Partnerships and collaborations

Latimer.AI has engaged in multiple initiatives with educational technology and equity-focused organizations:

  • Morgan State University (CEAMLS) — partnered to support testing and validation of the model’s inclusivity and bias-mitigation efforts.[4]
  • Black Girls Code — partnered to support access to AI technologies and education for young Black women in technology.[5]
  • Grammarly — collaboration announced in July 2025 to deliver an inclusive AI writing assistant bundle for higher education.[6]

Criticism and limitations

Publicly available technical evaluations of Latimer’s performance remain limited, and independent benchmark results have not yet been widely published as of 2025.[4] Because the vector database is proprietary, the full scope of licensed content is not fully disclosed in public documentation.
