I read like twenty years ago that the word "church" (clutch, hatch, match) is undoubtedly one syllable when written but that an argument can be made that it's two syllables -- CHUR-ch -- when spoken. Actually I don't think the book put it in such ambiguous terms as much as I've yet to find anyone who would so much as entertain the notion.
Does anyone know what book I'm talking about (perhaps a Norton's Guide to... type book) or have any insight into this phenomenon? Like maybe a name for such a word? Other examples?
"Hey buddy, can you get me to the church on time?" "Did you just ask me if you'd like to be punched in the face?" "Oh sorry, maybe I pronounced it wrong."
