I've been noticing that more and more Americans form the conditional perfect wrong.

Instead of saying:'would have thrown' (conditional followed by have + past participle = perfect infinitive) they say 'would have threw' (conditional followed by have + simple past = ?!).

Has anyone else noticed this? Is it strictly an indication of poor grammar? Maybe I'm just hanging out with the wrong crowd.

  • Funny you should say that. One of my favourite Marty Robbins' songs "Big Iron" has the words "He might have went on living ..." at 3.22 in link – BillJ Sep 29 '20 at 09:53
  • Although I speak BE, I'm exposed to a lot of AE and I would associate this with Texas and maybe adjoining states as a dialect or local use. – Greybeard Sep 29 '20 at 10:16
