Is there a pithy, clearly correct alternative?
The answers to the question "Singular or plural following a list" describe what to do when a verb comes after a list, but in this example the verb "be" comes before the list. Do we still have subject-verb agreement in this situation? How do I know whether the subject of the verb is the list, or the word "what"; and if it's the word "what", how can I figure out if it is singular or plural?
