I have taught social sciences for many years at a local college. Several years ago, our student population changed significantly from predominantly second-generation English speakers and native English speakers to many more English second language speakers (or third or fourth language speakers). In order to be a more effective teacher, I took the TESL certification. Even though I am a native English speaker with post-secondary education, I realized I had a lot to learn about the specifics of English grammar and syntax. I enjoy reading the posts on this site. They assist me in my attempt to teach my students and myself to become better readers and writers.
