The SMVT Bengaluru - Howrah SF Express formerly Howrah - Yesvantpur Superfast express, is a Superfast train belonging to the South Eastern Railway zone that runs between Howrah Junction and Bengaluru in India. It is currently being operated with 12863/12864 train numbers on a daily basis.[1][2][3]

This is also known for its popularity among medical patients traveling south for a absolute free treatment at Sathya Sai Baba Hospital Whitefield, Bengaluru and Christian Medical College Vellore for an affordable price.

On June 2, 2023, this line was involved in India's worst train accident in decades with at 296 fatalities.[4]

The 12864/SMVT Bengaluru - Howrah SF Express has an average speed of 57 km/h (35 mph) and covers 1,960 km (1,220 miles) in 34h 40m. Firstly, it cuts from Katpadi Jn. and directly Connects to Renigunta Jn. without touching Tirupati Later, in 2005, the train goes through Tirupati after cancellation of Tirupati Howrah Express. From June 4, 2019, the train is LHBfied from Howrah Jn. & from June 6, 2019, SMVT Bengaluru. From June 13, 2019, the train is LHBfied from Howrah Jn. & from June 15, 2019, SMVT Bengaluru 2nd rake. The train will fully LHBfied after getting the other two dedicated rakes for the route but now it has only two rake as of June 13, 2019. 3rd rake of this train will be LHBfied wef July 24, 2019 from Howrah Jn. and on July 26, 2019 from SMVT Bengaluru. At last, the last and the 4th rake were on July 29, 2019 from Howrah Jn. and wef July 31, 2019 from SMVT Bengaluru. Then, from August 2019, the train will finally run with fully LHBfied coaches on the tracks.

Trains are hauled by WAP-7 locomotives. Both trains are hauled by Santragachi Electric Loco Shed based WAP-4 electric locomotives to SMVT Bengaluru and vice versa.

Accidents and incidents

On June 2, 2023, a SMVT Bengaluru—Howrah Superfast Express train was involved in an accident in Odisha. Initial reports suggested more than 300 people were dead, and more than 1000 passengers injured.[7] It was reported that a Coromandel Express service had collided with a freight train, derailing the train, and subsequently the SMVT Bengaluru—Howrah Superfast Express collided onto this pile up.[7] The accident occurred just before reaching Bahanaga Bazar railway station in Balasore district of Odisha state.
