I am new at IELTS test and am looking at the sample tests from IELTS' official website. I have a question regarding the question 4 in the sample Academic Reading sample task – Identifying writer's views:
- Thirty per cent of deaths in the United States are caused by smoking-related diseases.
I think that the answer to this question should be NOT GIVEN as the text only indicated:
Smoking, it is believed, is responsible for 30 per cent of all deaths from cancer and clearly represents the most important preventable cause of cancer in countries like the United States today.
However, as the text, itself, did not make clear whether smoking-related diseases are responsible for 30 per cent of all deaths in the United States, I believe that the answer to the question 4 should be NOT GIVEN.
Can anyone enlighten me with some explanations? Should I employ outside knowledge in IETLS or shouldn't I?
