List of mosques in Azerbaijan

This is a list of mosques in Azerbaijan.[1]

Ashaghi Govhar Agha MosqueShusha1875–1876TSThe mosque was built at the order of Govhar Agha. The construction of the mosque, according to the inscription-text of the Govhar Agha vakfname, was to be completed by 1865–1866. The name of the master Karbalayi Safikhan, the architect of Karabakh, is found on the mosque.[6] It has two minarets. During the period when the city was under the occupation of the Armenian forces the mosque was in a dilapidated state. After the liberation of the city by Azerbaijan, the restoration works of the mosque conducted by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation began.[7] It is included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of Azerbaijan protected by state.[8]
Reed Mosque Shusha mid 18th century The mosque was built during the reign of Panah Ali Khan and was the first mosque in Panahabad (the first name of Shusha). Later, on the site of this mosque, the Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque was built.[9]
Chol Gala Mosque Shusha 18th century TS The mosque is located on the former Kuibyshev Street in the Chol Gala quarter (mahalla). It belongs to the type of Shusha quarter mosques with a flat facade and an asymmetric entrance. During the period when the city was under occupation of the Armenian forces, the mosque was in a ruined state. It is included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of Azerbaijan protected by state.[10]
Chukhur Mahalla Mosque Shusha 18th century TS The mosque is located in the Chukhur Mahalla quarter. During the period when the city was under the occupation of the Armenian forces, the mosque was in a ruined state. It is included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of Azerbaijan protected by state.[11]
Guyulug Mosque Shusha 18th century TS The mosque is located in the quarter (mahalla) Guyulug. It belongs to the type of Shusha quarter mosques having an eyvan with wide arches of various shapes, which form an organic whole with the prayer hall. It is included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of Azerbaijan protected by state.[12]
Haji Yusifli Mosque Shusha 18th century TS The mosque is located on Gasim Ismayilov Street in the Haji Yusifli quarter (mahalla). It belongs to the type of Shusha quarter mosques with a single volume and a flat wooden ceiling. It is included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of Azerbaijan protected by state.[13]
Julfalar Mosque Shusha 18th century TS The mosque is located on Uzeyir Hajibeyov Street in the Julfalar quarter (mahalla). It belongs to the type of Shusha quarter mosques with a flat facade and an asymmetric entrance. It is included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of Azerbaijan protected by state.[14]
Yukhari Govhar Agha MosqueShusha1768–1885TSThe mosque was originally built by the order of the second Karabakh Khan Ibrahim Khalil-Khan and stands on the basis of the historical core of the city.[15] In 1883–1885, by the order of the daughter of Ibrahim Khan Govhar Agha, the mosque was completed by the Azerbaijani architect Karbalayi Safikhan Karabakhi.[15] It has two minarets. In the Soviet years, the mosque was included in the list of historical monuments protected by state and began to be used as a local history museum. After the occupation of Shusha by the Armenian forces in 1992, the mosque ceased to function and until the late 2010s was in dilapidated conditions. After the liberation of the city by Azerbaijan, the restoration works of the mosque conducted by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation began.[16] It is included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of Azerbaijan protected by state.[17]
