Pre-season and friendlies

On June 1, Boro announced two pre-season friendlies, against Hartlepool United and York City.[48] Five days later, a third fixture was added, against Rotherham United.[49] A fourth pre-season friendly was announced, at home against Auxerre.[50] A trip to Bradford City was also confirmed as a fifth pre-season match.[51] A sixth and final friendly was confirmed, against Real Betis.[52]

EFL Cup

Middlesbrough were drawn away to Huddersfield Town in the first round,[61] Bolton Wanderers in the second round,[62] Bradford City in the third round,[63] Exeter City in the fourth round[64] and Port Vale in the quarter-finals[65] and then against Chelsea in a Two-legged tie, first at home and second away.[66][67]
